[[Kyle Petty]]'s [[Mello Yello]]-sponsored [[Felix Sabates#NASCAR|#42]] won the [[Pole position|pole]], putting a Petty on the [[Daytona 500]] pole for the first time since [[1966 Daytona 500|1966]], and only the second time ever. [[Kyle Petty|Kyle]] was also the first [[North Carolina]] driver to win the 500 pole since [[Benny Parsons]] in [[1982 Daytona 500|1982]].
