He played youth football at [[Reading F.C.|Reading]] before moving to [[Ipswich Town F.C.|Ipswich Town]] in 2006 where he continued in the youth structure. He made his full professional debut for the club in April 2009. He has also played at various levels of international football, scoring the winning goal in the [[2010 UEFA European Under-17 Football Championship]] Final.

On 2 April 2011, Tottenham Hotspur manager, [[Harry Redknapp]] admitted that his side had not made a bid for Wickham. ===Sunderland===
On 29 June 2011, Wickham signed a four-year deal with Premier League club [[Sunderland A.F.C.|Sunderland]] for a fee of £8 million. Despite having recently signed a new contract with Ipswich, Wickham had been widely tipped to move to a Premier League club following a highly successful 2010–11 season. He scored his first goal for Sunderland in a pre-season friendly against [[Kilmarnock F.C.|Kilmarnock]]. Wickham scored his first Premier League goal for the Black Cats a week later in the 2–2 draw with [[Aston Villa F.C.|Aston Villa]]. The following week against [[Manchester United F.C.|Manchester United]] at [[Old Trafford]], Wickham suffered a knee injury and had to be substituted just five minutes into the game.<ref>{{cite news| url=http://www1.skysports.com/football/news/11695/7294582/Injury-woe-for-Wickham | work=Sky Sports}}</ref> The arrival of new manager Martin O'Neill saw Wickham fall out of favour as he spent the majority of the remainder of the season on the bench and playing for the reserves.

He was still frozen out at the start of the 2012/2013 season but good form for the reserves and England U21's forced him into the squad for Sunderland's visit to Everton in November. He came on as a half time substitute against Norwich on 2 December and played well, creating a number of chances for his teammates as Sunderland lost 2–1. He was rewarded for his performance with a start against Chelsea the following week and again performed well. The return to fitness of first choice striker Steven Fletcher meant he dropped back to the substitutes' bench for the trip to Old Trafford against Manchester United. Once again, Wickham was a half time substitute and was directly responsible for Sunderland's improved performance.  Wickham's resurgence to first team football prompted manager O'Neill to say “Connor is a very, very strong player and I’ve noticed that in the year I’ve been here,” Wickham came off the bench at Bolton in the 3rd round of the FA Cup to score his first goal of the season to inspire Sunderland to come from 2–0 down to earn a replay.

Following that game, and the important experience Wickham gained, he returned to the England under-19 side. However, it would not be long before he was back in the fold for the under-21's.

On 14 March 2011, it was announced that Wickham had been included in the squad for England's games against Denmark and Iceland.<ref>[http://www.twtd.co.uk/news.php?storyid=18065 Wickham in England U21 Squad]</ref> He came on as a substitute in the game against Denmark, which England went on to win 4–0.<ref>[http://www.independent.co.uk/sport/football/international/sturridge-stands-out-as-england-romp-to-40-victory-2252547.html Denmark 0–4 England]</ref> The following Monday, Wickham started the game in a friendly against Iceland at [[Deepdale Stadium|Deepdale]] in [[Preston, Lancashire|Preston]]. It was his first start for the under-21's, and he played the full 90 minutes as England lost the game 2–1 to a very strong Iceland side that consisted of a number of first team regulars. Wickham played as a lone striker in the game.

Prior to the Iceland game, Wickham admitted that he was hopeful of being included in the squad that would play in the summer's Euro 2011 under-21's [[2011 UEFA European Under-21 Football Championship|tournament]] due to take place in June. Having been an instrumental figure in the success of the under-17's the previous summer, he felt he could repeat the feat at a higher level. He said:
